Learning

At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.

What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

Our subjects

In the NSW K–6 curriculum, students engage in a wide range of subjects taught by their classroom teacher to support their learning, creativity, and personal growth. Core learning areas include English, where students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and Mathematics, which builds understanding in number, patterns, measurement, space, and problem-solving.

Students also explore Science and Technology, investigating the natural and made world through hands-on experiments and creative projects. In Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), they learn about history, geography, people, places, and cultures, while Creative Arts encourages self-expression through visual arts, music, drama, and dance. Personal Development, Health, and Physical Education (PDHPE) supports students’ wellbeing, safety, and physical skills. These subjects are integrated into meaningful learning experiences, with the classroom teacher guiding each student’s growth, curiosity, and love of learning from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Religion and ethics

At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, on Thursday afternoons between 1:50pm and 2:30pm.

The following SRE classes are offered at Castlereagh Public School:

  • Catholic SRE is provided by Corpus Christi Parish in Cranebrook.
  • Combined Christian SRE is provided by Toms Anglican Churches in Cranebrook. For more information about the SRE curriculum used in this school visit whysre.com.au.

When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or use the online form (if available at our school).
